Hong Kong Diary part 1
How to leave the airport with an octopus

I

had such high hopes for this diary… but here is a month that passes and I didn’t even start. So many things happened in those 30 days… it is incredible how a person can change everything in life in such a short time. We are such adaptable creatures! I slowly reach this moment od stabilization, boredom and, as usual – job seeking. Don’t think there is nothing to do… on the opposite… but it is about this stupid feeling in your head that you HAVE TO go to WORK to stop wasting your days.

Adaptable but strange creatures… The question here should be what happened for me to reach this moment? I will try to explain everything and, at the same time – give you a tutorial about how to move to Hong Kong.

This is how my adventure with HK (Hong Kong) started. With dcwtours.com as well! I leave you with old times and dates, for the story… Although, some time has already passed. Follow the diary and then jump to the main pages for tourist info that will eventually show up. I am a tour-guide after all. The diary may continue one day… tutorial on how to move out of Hong Kong. We will see… life does what it wants.

Our journey started on the 6th of August at the Wałęsa airport in Gdańsk, some afternoon. We had a suitcase each, a hand one as well, full backpacks, a high level of excitement and 12 hours with Lufthansa in front of us. We were SO happy that we didn’t take that third suitcase we were talking about. In fact, when you really think about what you need to move to another continent it turns out that this luggage for extra 250€ is not needed. And it is somehow easier to walk wit one big suitcase, one small cabin luggage and 7 kilograms on your back… like a caravan with 2 camels. True holidays!

Well, moving on – a jump to Munich and a bigger one later – all this waiting for us. I went to sleep as usual, around midnight on a plane full of people. I woke up at 4 PM the next day in a completely different country. Our steel monster looked amazing in the bright sunshine… Airbus, double-decker – it brought us here. All those emotions vanished quickly because the airport was just another airport. So where is this cultural clash? Not yet… after 10 years of looking at various European airports, the one in Hong Kong (HK later) was nothing special. Only the people… somehow different from those face masks… 3 people doing a job of one in Europe… I didn’t notice much then. Maybe I was just tired.

We were ready for a total catastrophe – treating HK as an adventure, soon to be left behind us. This means – we could live there for about 2 weeks with no problems. But… which way should we go next…

But… which way should we go next…

I have to admit, as a tour guide, I was not prepared at all. Well, I hoped to find some signs. And there were! But so many!!! I didn’t know where to go. Darn me! First steps on another earth and such a shame!

But we were insured. Check! We had a reservation for SIM cards – check! Reservation for Octopus card, to be used in public transport – check! The one for our hotel – check! Everything waited its turn in our luggage. I even found the metro sign! Unfortunately much faster than the place to pick up those cards…

And here a remark must be added. Two people with 4 suitcases and two, heavy backpacks, after 16 hours of journey, hungry (apparently your first meal should be in the place of destination to avoid jet lag), with no caffeine in the system (we were actively looking for a cafeteria) – it is not a good moment to be in a hurry nor make a discussion with your partner! The level of your irritation is 10 times normal!

All we needed was to stand in one place for 5 minutes, look around… to be fair, my darling went to a bathroom and I had those 5 minutes. God bless biology!

But the effects are what’s important – I know where to go! Just to the other end of the airport… but hey! We found a meaning to our life again!

Few words of explanation:

  • SIM and Octopus reservation was made through one of many Internet, tourist webpages. I think ours was called Klook
  • The airport has a lot of desks there. You can arrange a lot of things, including getting a Chinese visa. These are the desks that we wanted
  • In a similar situation (like looking for a desk in part A of the airport) – I highly recommend a plan of the place. Here you have the HK airport one
  • SIM card – the rule of traveling is to use the telephone number of the country you visit (it was like that before the EU). This is why I recommend having something like that. It usually comes with some GB for the Internet which is quite handy
  • Octopus card – the name for a pass for HK public transport. The Internet told us that it can also be used to pay in some shops. Only after our arrival, we learned the scale of “paying with Octopus” (you can find more here). It is not necessary for a tourist – they have Visa Debit Cards, and the rules of playing in another country are more and more friendly.

In the meanwhile, as you read, we arrived at our destination.

But we only could pay in cash!!! – You can remember about it now because it is very common to use cash in HK. Do not cut your cards yet, they just prefer something else. Plus – we had our European card, with no fee for withdrawing in ATMs… Ufff! SO no, we were not furious that there is yet another problem in front of us… ( I somehow feel all those things again just by writing about it, lol).

But stories tend to end good – the cavalry arrived with cash (my half can be quite fast when he wants to. Although it felt really slow then!) What is more we had found a cafeteria, just next to us – I do not know why we were temporarily blind and didn’t notice it before. All is well that ends well.
